I had previously seen that particular episode of Outer Limits and was just beginning to write up all the problems with the 'fictional hypothesis' and why it merely tries to explain one tiny aspect of this case while it isn't consistent with everything else that was documented. Luckily reading Josephs post halted me and saved me some time.

Quote:
"But this is the tactic all debunkers use. If we start debating debunkers, who try to throw doubt by explaining one small aspect of this experience we will argue to doomsday."

I'll leave it at that.

Personally I believe what's documented surrounding this story holds up for itself and do not need any promoting.

But I'll say this, the promoter of Barneys 'fictional story' have never ever bothered to ask them if they actually watched that particular episode. In a debunkers world that makes perfectly sense since his mind was already made up.

"Don't bother me with the facts, my mind is made up!" Yes, I obviously do ...Joe--The sensors in the box? Yes, I obviously do know, but the Coalition would rather hold back on this info until the final report is released. But they're all quite basic, as you might imagine: Sound and light level sensors, among others. We couldn't pick up words or take pictures (too many privacy and technical issues involved), but we could ascertain amounts of ambient sound and light. If someone turned a light or radio on in the room, the box would sense it.

Ultimately, as has been elsewhere observed, we face an intelligence as well as scientific challenge with UFOs. How, for instance, does one investigate a phenomenon that knows it's being studied and might be taking steps to dissimulate or disguise itself? In the event, intelligence techniques might be more beneficial than basic scientific observations or clusters of instruments. This is one of the lessons gleaned from the Skinwalker Ranch and maybe from the Abduction Monitoring Project also. We shall see.--Rob SwiatekAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6624008755912934271.post-86746879009433967772008-09-01T19:00:00.000-04:002008-09-01T19:00:00.000-04:00Thank you for the information and correction. Debunkers don't care about those details, they generalize.``

Sorry Daniel but you didn't do you research with that comment. I got this from Wiki, although I first heard it on UFO Files or a similar show.

* In his 1990 article Entirely Unpredisposed, Martin Kottmeyer suggested that Barney's memories revealed under hypnosis might have been influenced by an episode of the science fiction television show The Outer Limits titled "The Bellero Shield", which was broadcast about two weeks before Barney's first hypnotic session. The episode featured an extraterrestrial with large eyes who says, "In all the universes, in all the unities beyond the universes, all who have eyes have eyes that speak." The report from the regression featured a scenario that was in some respects similar to the television show. In part, Kottmeyer wrote:

"Wraparound eyes are an extreme rarity in science fiction films. I know of only one instance. They appeared on the alien of an episode of an old TV series "The Outer Limits" entitled "The Bellero Shield". A person familiar with Barney's sketch in "The Interrupted Journey" and the sketch done in collaboration with the artist David Baker will find a "frisson" of "déjà vu" creeping up his spine when seeing this episode. The resemblance is much abetted by an absence of ears, hair, and nose on both aliens. Could it be by chance? Consider this: Barney first described and drew the wraparound eyes during the hypnosis session dated 22 February 1964. "The Bellero Shield" was first broadcast on "10 February 1964. Only twelve days separate the two instances. If the identification is admitted, the commonness of wraparound eyes in the abduction literature falls to cultural forces." (see "external links" below for Kottmeyer's full article.)

Though Betty was alive when Kottmeyer made his claims, he never sought her out to ask if she or Barney had seen the episode. When a different researcher asked Betty about The Outer Limits, she insisted she had "never heard of it". (Clark, 291) She further noted that it was unlikely that Barney would have seen the episode in question because he usually worked in the evenings when the episode was broadcast, and when Barney was home in the evenings, Betty reported that they were both usually occupied with the NAACP or other community activities.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6624008755912934271.post-88911439461795390342008-09-01T15:26:00.000-04:002008-09-01T15:26:00.000-04:00Dear Bob,Anyone want to donate some money to help ...Dear Bob,
Anyone want to donate some money to help solve one of the greatest mysteries facing mankind?

Thanks so much for adding that. First, MUFON was but one of three organizations equally involved with creating and administering the Abduction/Ambient Monitoring Project--the other two were the Center for UFO Studies and the Fund for UFO Research. The three groups comprise the UFO Research Coalition (incorporated in Virginia) and Coalition directors ran--and continue to run--the project. Second, Tom Deuley was an employee of the Coalition and was one of many who contributed to the evolving designs of the instrument box. Third, we don't yet know if the instruments detected any unusual patterns or events related to abductions: They might have; they might not have. At the moment, a statistician engaged by the Coalition is examining the data for any patterns, correlations, and/or anomalies that might be present. Even subtle patterns could reveal insights.

The statistician is expensive, however, and is paid by the hour. As such, the Coalition couldn't afford many hours and desperately needs additional funding to complete the task in a timely manner. If anyone is interested in contributing $$ (tax deductible ones at that!), please contact MUFON or CUFOS or me for information on how this can be done.

Joe, as always, thanks for bringing a rational viewpoint to UFO research through your posts. You're very product...Interesting reading as always. You're very productive. You post quite often. Nice.

I did not know the existence of MUFONs Ambient Monitoring Project. About time someone tried to get some kind of proof.

Debunkers/skeptics that already have their minds set up won't accept any "proof" from this even though it seems MUFON uses no exotic technology to record these events. Its probably dependable technology (otherwise used to properly aid other aspects of our daily lives) but eventually won't pass the skeptics eyes because of what the results would imply. That's a shame but nonetheless apart of the daily battle the serious researcher must face.

The Skinwalker Ranch (and the area surrounding it) really experienced some truly strange phenomenon. Lots of people witnessed it so it wasn't hoax either. These were farmers and such, just ordinary people.

I did not know of the incident with the camera, but that was interesting. I guess skeptics, normally very keen to explain away everything, would take a pass on that. It could be whatever, since "we" all know ETs don't exist, right? They would all take that incident very lightly. I would not.

I think its obvious from the Skinwalker Ranch observations that the phenomenon is not three dimensional and physical to the extent that its ripe to do traditional experiments on. I think the sofistication in the instrumentation must be significantly higher. (That goes for research of "ghostly" Paranormal as well)

You are probably right that their research approach was a little simplistic/rigid/traditional. I guess you have to go that route to have your back free to the skeptics. You'd be able to say you applied a sanctioned/conventional scientific research method to this very strange phenomenon. Now when that failed, it's easier to get acceptance for a more experimental approach. But for that to happen, the investigations must continue (is there enough budget for that and does the phenomenon persist?).

Sci-Fi culture is interesting but enables debunkers to explain away everything as fantasy or dreams or subconcious or whatever based on what is already established by Sci-Fi to our culture. Today, we all know the "alien look" and the usual mentioned ET rases and the vehicles they use and the abductions they supposedly undertake in them and so forth. It is so obvious to me who have studied these things for like 10 years that, over the years, artists have gotten pretty much EVERY KEY COMPONENT to their works from the paranormal or esoteric realm (the rest is creative writing on their parts of course).

Also, like the Betty and Barney Hill story these books/films DON'T pre-date real encounters/cases. Debunkers don't care about those details, they generalize. And to them paranormal/UFOs is mostly a cultural phenomenon reacting upon very prosaic events. So pretty much everything paranormal can be explained away as an outlet for people to act out their current influenced Sci-Fi-popculture. I personally hate that generalized approach - you weigh each case ON ITS OWN MERITS - PERIOD.

IMO while not much is truly original about Sci-Fi work, a lot of it is really really interesting, probing into existencial/ethical questions. A lot more interesting/thoughtful than the usual nonsensical political debate, that's for sure.

But like most, I'm into hard facts and that's why I read your blog. Always solid info.

I take your opinions for what they're worth. All of what you say makes sense but I'm not so sure what you describe is the only agenda possible. I believe there are more possibilities to ETs holding a (mostly) non-hostile stance. Maybe I can name some of my beliefs another time, for another discussion.

Thanks!

// Daniel Bergh, SwedenDanielhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00072766173671696948noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6624008755912934271.post-14256987003488038982008-08-28T23:17:00.000-04:002008-08-28T23:17:00.000-04:00To late this has been over for over a year... we g...To late this has been over for over a year... we got you!
joeJoseph Capphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12428219762980782866noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6624008755912934271.post-70942051347235621982008-08-28T22:08:00.000-04:002008-08-28T22:08:00.000-04:00Or.........4.)
